CARVER and Edits

I almost bought "Beginners" by RC today

and felt like comparing and contrasting the originals (tidied)
with the ruthless Lish edits

BUT the Library of America volume has the originals and the edits
so why not buy that? It's quality paper and has ALL of Carver's prose

The number's don't tally!

When to give up on a story...?

So, i've tried a few times in the last few weeks to string more than a few words together to form that thing we all know as a story. And every time I have hit some kind of wall, usually at the end of the first 'scene', or as the story needs to segue into something like a middle, where I look at the story, see how or where it may be going, and realise that it's not up to scratch. There's usually a fundamental problem. It may be that the MC is too passive/lacks motivation....
